I have recently returned to ceramics after a long hiatus teaching science. I enjoy experimenting with glazes, forms, textures and colours, and as an ecologist I'm drawn to the natural world. So, my clay story is one of evolution, experimentation, and themes that explore science, culture and nature.

I have been making pottery since 2017 and find that I enjoy making one off, bespoke pieces that highlight my natural surroundings.  I found that I can achieve this best with my slip work and  choice of clay.   The attention to detail that I have learned from being an Artist continues to offer inspiration in my ceramics. I love rustic, functional domestic ware inspired by nature.

Brownbear Pottery was born in 2022, no two pieces are the same, always highlighting the maker's hand...

I am based in North Canterbury, also make pots under the name ‘Two Chain Pottery’.  Japanese Wabi Sabi, or the view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection, and earthiness are the main characters of my ceramics. Creating tableware that makes everyday meal time more interesting and special is my main passion and they withstand oven/ microwave oven/ dishwasher for ease of use.  Some of my recent ornamental pieces feature sculpted Piwakawaka or Fantail that I see many in my garden.

Emily Quane

I was born in London, UK and grew up in the Peak District. Growing up in the countryside and travel gave me my love of walking and an eye for admiring the landscapes. This inspired my developing artistic vision when I went on to do a BA Hons degree in Fine Art. After travelling I became a secondary school art teacher. Since moving to New Zealand I have been so inspired by the amazing and dramatic landscapes right here on my doorstep. My main passion is painting and the relationship between 2D and 3D work. My ceramics echo paintings and visa versa. Every piece is unique, reflecting the handmade quality of the work. My work is a harmonious fusion of art and nature.

I am passionate about clay! Having spent a large part of my life immersed in creating with clay- the excitment of the potential has never diminished. Planning the next project is always full of hope and anticipation. I began potting making wheel thrown domestic ware, after a long hiatus,my desire was to make more organic, hand made work. Pieces which sit happily in my own environment are my measure of success.

I have been potting for many years & create both wheel & handmade forms. I was born in Australia & lived there til my early 20's. I have found that my pottery decoration now seems to have an Australian influence which I find quite intriguing. I have really enjoyed experimenting with alternative firings & have found that Pit/Barrel Firing is my passion. I love being involved directly with the flames & as the smoke & fire swirl around these forms they receive beautiful & unique markings. I am always filled with excitement at the unpacking. I believe pottery teaches you about life & learning to accept the highs & lows that life throws at you.

I have been a potter since 1977, almost in the dark ages as the glazes were then mainly browns and greens. I have a Diploma of Ceramic Art from the Otago Art School. I have lived in Christchurch since 1991 and I have been teaching since 1992 . I like sharing my knowledge of all aspects of making and glazing pottery. My best love is wood firing - what fun. I like the earthy colors that the flames make when they move through the kiln and the roar of when it comes out the chimney. Most of my work is fired in an electric kiln with slip and glazes ; again the earthy Autumn colours, blues & greens, with a splash of bright colour. Having fun with what you love doing.

After graduating '73 from Otago Polytech Fine Arts, I worked for 15 years in the New Zealand Ceramics Industry (when NZ had one). McSkimmings, Ceramco & Teal Ceramics- mainly involved in clay body, glaze and product development. Since have continued this as a hobby. Interests tend towards glaze development and more uncommon forms of craft pottery. Currently involved in under-glaze decoration and crystalline glazes.
